Why landscaping is different in the Treasure Valley
Three local facts drive most design decisions here. The soil is alkaline and low in organic matter, which locks up iron and other micronutrients — it is why so many valley maples and ornamentals go yellow between green veins, and why plant selection and soil preparation matter more than they would in neutral loam. The subsoil is heavy clay that compacts hard, so drainage and grading have to be designed rather than assumed. And most neighbourhoods run on irrigation-district water at variable pressure, which constrains how a system can be zoned if the far corners are going to get water in August.
New-construction yards
A new-construction lot is mostly a soil problem. Builders strip topsoil, compact what is left with heavy equipment, and the sod goes down on top of it — which is why so many Treasure Valley lawns struggle in years one and two no matter how they are watered. Getting grading, drainage, soil preparation and irrigation right before the sod is laid is cheaper than fixing any of them afterwards, and it is the single biggest determinant of how that lawn performs for the next ten years. If the sod is already down and struggling, core aeration and a consistent feeding programme will improve it.
Xeriscaping
Water-wise design, which in a high-desert valley on irrigation shares is worth taking seriously. Done properly it is not a gravel yard — it is planting and zoning chosen so the parts of the property that need to be green are green, and the parts that do not are doing something more interesting than consuming water. It also lowers the irrigation load on the zones that remain, which usually makes those zones perform better.
How the process works
We start with a site visit and a conversation about what you want the space to do — not a catalogue. From there we look at grade, drainage, sun, existing trees and the irrigation situation, and design to those constraints. Installation sequences soil and grading first, then irrigation, then planting and sod, because that order is the only one that does not involve undoing work. Afterwards the property can go straight onto a fertilization programme, which is how new sod gets established properly.
Timing and seasonality
Spring and fall are the best windows for planting and sod here — soil is warm enough for roots to establish but air temperatures are not yet punishing. Mid-summer installs are possible and routinely done, but they need far more water and more watching. Grading and hardscape work can run later into the season, until the ground freezes. Design and planning in winter is a good use of the off season, since it puts you at the front of the spring schedule.

Why Diamond Lawns
The people designing the irrigation and choosing the sod are the people who will be feeding that lawn for the next decade, because we have been maintaining Treasure Valley landscapes since 2006. That tends to produce decisions that still look right in year five — which is a different standard from decisions that look right on install day.

Frequently asked questions
Do you design as well as install?
Yes. Design, installation and the ongoing maintenance afterwards — which is the reason the design tends to hold up, since we are the ones living with it.
Why does my new-construction lawn look so bad?
Almost always compacted subsoil with the topsoil stripped off. Sod laid on compacted ground cannot root properly, so it stays shallow, dries out fast and thins. Core aeration and a consistent feeding program will improve it; grading and soil preparation before the sod goes down prevents it.
What is xeriscaping, and does it mean a gravel yard?
No. It means designing and zoning the landscape around water conservation — choosing planting and layout so water goes where it earns its keep. The result can be as green as you want it; it is just green in the right places.
When is the best time of year to install sod or plants in Idaho?
Spring and fall. The soil is warm enough for roots to establish without the air temperatures of a Treasure Valley July. Summer installs work but need considerably more water and attention.
Do you work on commercial landscaping too?
Yes. See commercial lawn maintenance for ongoing programs, and ask about design and build during the walk-through.
How much does a landscaping project cost?
It depends entirely on scope — grading, irrigation, sod area, planting and any hardscape. We quote from a site visit and a design conversation. Call (208) 484-5568 to schedule a consultation.
